August 23 packing... defeated!I slayed the zippered dragons!
I checked with the airline
I will only be charged $39 total for
a) the extra bag
b) the extra weight
and once I get to AIM my extra weighted baggage can be dispersed throughout my teammates' luggage
hurrah!
crisis destroyed!
nerves at ease! packing...the bane of my existenceevery time it's the same thing
I pack both bags and then find out they are both over 50 pounds
I've even gambled packing a second carry-on
and THEN realized that I haven't even thought about what shoes I will be taking yet.
On top of that, my flight to the US has done away with a second bag all together
meaning, I'm already paying for an extra bag
how are people supposed to move?
I'm taking a break
I hate packing
passionately
always have
always will
the end. August 21 sunglass sunburnserves me right for not putting sunscreen on I suppose.
I am currently the shameful owner of a mean sunglass sunburn
meaning... I look like a red and white raccoon
but it's ok because if I've learned anything over the years from being a pasty person
it's how to nurse my skin back from the ouch state
I went to wonderland today with my brother
the first time I've been in a few years and I must say, behemoth -biggest coaster in Canada- may be my new favourite ride.
It beat out the bat today (my favourite ride for at least 6 years)
There's nothing quite like getting on a ride for the first time
when you don't know what to expect...
I recommend it, not only for its speed and its height
but also for its gracefulness
it's so smooth and quiet you can literally have a conversation up in the air without straining your voice
that is, if there wasn't 20 people screaming
oh and it's also a long ride, it's just about 2 minutes of ride time which is a huge bonus for the time that you stand waiting to get on it.
that's enough of my ride review
as for prep
3 days left and my car insurance is taken care of
need to cancel my phone tomorrow
packing is in the works as laundry is being done
last day of work is tomorrow
and i guess the only really pressing things are the ones in the mail that have not yet arrived
ie: IRS forms, new credit card, new health card etc.
other than that, things are going well
Nikita is hanging out with me right now
I brought her over for a visit
about to drive her home though and tomorrow I will pick her up after work for a sleep over
Nikita is my dog... I guess she's really my dad's dog
but I hate saying bye to her cause she doesn't get why she wont see me for another year
and she's getting old ya know...
enough of that
off to switch the laundry
August 16 visit to the book storeIt has been a pretty productive Saturday.
I picked up most, if not all, of the supplies and random items that I need to go away.
things like shampoo, soap, bug spray, vitamins... that kind of stuff.
Then I went to the book store.
Oliver, a kenyan boy that I befriended while I was over there last time, (you can read about him down a few posts)
loves to read, and write for that matter. He wants to be a writer or a teacher.
English is his third language and he certainly doesn't read and write at the level north american kids do at his age but he is incredibly talented.
I talk to him nearly every saturday and each time he reads me a new story that he has written.
He really likes metaphors and he paints pictures with words really well.
He has read a story about Eskimos and now he wont stop asking me about snow.
I know that his school doesn't have a library and he definitely doesn't have access to books so today I bought him some books.
I also have a journal for him to that he can keep all his writings in one place
(I often hear him running around and rustling papers that are randomly left around his home.)
The books that I bought him are...
1. A School Like Mine - Unicef (he told me he loves learning about the world)
2. How High Can an Elephant Jump? - Guy Campbell (he can wow his school friends with his trivia knowledge ;))
3. Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe - C.S. Lewis (this will be a challenging read for him but where better place to start than Narnia?)
I really believe that Oliver has a gift and given that his life contains a lot of discouragement
I will continue to encourage him to work towards his dreams of becoming a writer.
Side note,
I got my new licence today!
no more handing out ID that looks like my autopsy photo after being found at the bottom of a lake.
awesomeness!
What else..
I had popcorn tonight
and I still don't like it so it's sitting in a bowl stinking up the house
that's all I got for now,
peace oot
August 12 checkity check checkI've been able to check things off my list of 'things to annihilate before I leave'.
Unfortunately, it seems that the list keeps getting longer while my time keeps getting shorter.
To do this week:
1. figure out my banking situation
2. find someone to buy my car
3. cancel car insurance
4. suspend my phone contract
5. find a backpack that my giant laptop will fit into
Speaking of laptops, last week was slightly nerve-racking.
My new laptop managed to contract an illness before I was able to install any anti-virusesesses.
This ended up costing me $200 to fix, which was SO much fun.
*sarcasm*
That's strike two against my laptop in 4 weeks... but to be honest, I shouldn't really be surprised.
The last time I was gearing up to head overseas my other laptop was behaving even more peculiarly.
Symptoms included; not starting at all, blue screen of death, only working properly for those other than myself...etc.
Classic pre-venture ridiculousness.
All I need now is microsoft office and to somehow acquire Adobe premiere...
my disc mysteriously had a chunk of data scratched off even though it's been inside a disc case for a year.
That's it for now, I'm feeling about 80% tired, 15% creative and 5% anxious these days.
Those numbers will shift dramatically soon enough. |
